Los Angeles Beach - 2 Bedroom Flat
This was a well used, 2 bedroom California upstairs flat with brightly lit front Living Room due to expansive windows on 3 sides. With a bird’s eye view to the block, yet tucked behind two sets of palm trees providing unexpected camouflage, this unassuming space had much to offer.
Living Room AFTER
Throughout the day, the sun dictated how its glow would paint the interiors: shards of glowing orange across the floor and furniture, shining speckles throughout, or brightly lit with almost no shadow in an almost even yellow haze.
Living Room BEFORE
Upstairs AFTER
Such a beautiful space in which to read, lounge, dine or just have coffee - perhaps watching passersby, or the many hummingbirds, blackbirds, squirrels and finches that seemed drawn to the beautiful location and plants.
Working with only the existing furniture, and keeping the beezy beachy feel of the neighbourhood and cottage-like house construction, I focussed on functional areas of beauty: finding the gems, placing them to draw the eye, and keeping a relaxed ecclectic feel in neutral colours as much as possible - colours reflecting the california sand, sun and sky.
Upstairs BEFORE
The flat had a long hallway in the middle - it was important to break up any sense of narrowness and restriction by opening doorways and creating inviting focal points to draw the eye back to the light and into the larger spaces.
UNDER CONSTRUCTION….
To achieve a modern look yet maintain a reverence for the ecclectic pieces of unique beauty - and in keeping with the overall structural style and age of the house - I created a combination of unique handmade items and contemporary design elements.
I incorporated existing pieces the owner already had such as carved furniture or artwork where possible. I matched these by dimension and colour palette to best suit the rooms I decorated. Each room thereby had an identity and predominant colour of its own, yet flowed easily into the next, often complementing the next
colour palette or providing hints of colours to come. Large artwork tended to become statement pieces, often defining the main colour or mood of the room.
